Speak No Evil
I don't know for what reasons people would just get up and get on the road. Just to see what the rest of the world looks like? Just to leave their troubles behind for a while? Just to get a tan or just for the sake of it or for no particular reason at all?
For me, to throw myself into a 17-day 4-nation trip where I was always on the run like a conveyor belt, it's a mixture of inspirations and obligations.
Day 1 - 2
Beijing - Dubai - Zurich - Lake Como - Verona
The onset of a 2-week-long splashy shopping spree arrived even before the flight took off. All the women delved into the taxfree cosmetics store in T3 of Beijing Capital International Airport. Lists in hands, they danced from one booth to another, like bumble bees rushing their ways among flowers. And I am sure if they had two more arms, they would have flapped them as fast as bee wings, making the same droning noise out of sheer excitement and joy. Needless to say, a benign sign for the trip.
The flight from Beijing to Dubai was uneventful. Given limited time for layover, we didn't venture out of the enormous Dubai airport. Despite the lack of such scenes as futuristic sail-shaped hotel or man-made islands that sprawl out into the sea like a palm tree, the Dubai airport is an ideal place for people watch.

It's where my mind would conjure up a chaotic extraterrestrial trade hub buzzing with outlandish bootleggers, travelers and exotic merchandises. (Read I'd never seen so many middleastern folks and plastic taxfree bags under one roof)
We stayed at a budget hotel close to the Zurich airport for the night and then took an SBB train to cross the border to Lago di Como in northern Italy.

Wasn't exactly our boat but more or less along the same line

There was also a bright yellow 2003 Chevy Corvette parked nearby. Bikes and Corvette but it still didn't feel right. Maybe it's the pavement or style of structures or the overall ambience that overwhelmed the motorized presence of American culture and declared triumphantly the root of Europa is here to remain

The clouds! I was convinced the Renaissance painters didn't exaggerate

Too hot, had to chill
The cruise in the lake was just ok. I wasn't really impressed by the water, the broken waves or idyllic homesteads among lush bushes on the hills. Although, I was fairly amused by guys wearing speedoes on on the shore. The boat pulled over at different spots along the banks. We got off at Bellagio for roughly 50 mins until I was totally soaked in the heat of the Mediterranean sun. We finally returned to Como after 3 hours of mediocre crusin'.

LAGO di COMO

She's everywhere. somehow I think she's no longer the person from Lost in Translation

I paid him 2 euros for a photo of the dog, who nodded to the rythm of the accordion
Taking no notice of my sweat-soaked tshirt and pent up eagerness to get on the road for Verona, the women's spirit was high, which led to my better half's 500-euro worth of Swarovski jewleries.
We didn't head out until the women got scared by themselves.
The drive from Como to Verona wasn't too bad in the sense we had only 2 minor detours (well, one was about 5k). By the time we pulled up to Hotel Borghetti in Valpolicella, it was already 9 pm. Unlike China, the town was literally asleep. We had to hold up the kitchen staff that were about to leave. They kindly fixed some very tasty and fulfilling fettucini with mushroom sauce. Blessed by the fact that the entire Valpolicella area is known for its vineyards, we had some great wine to wash down the rushedness of the day. I halted myself on the way out and returned to poor Maria with 5 euros of gratuity. She barely spoke a word of English, yet we managed to come up with some great and much needed food.
You know what? I couldn't care less about Romeo and Juliet. Just let me sleep! But, I had to go in the morning. Verona was a nice and quite little town. If not for Shakespear and the Serie A underperformer, I wouldn't know this place.

Silly love wish stickies piled on each other by chewed gum. Yikes.

I had only one thing to say to the lock hangers and sticky stuckers: Romeo and Juliet ended in death out of miscommunication. Their love story may be immortal but they died prematurely.
I found some relief in this message, which was left there 1 day ahead of my visit

which goes like: Juliet was a(n) idiot who rushed everything
Thank you baby Howard and Chase Raily from Arizona. You guys made my day out of this senseless hommage to two immature teen love birds who showed no respect to family honor and pissed away rich lives ahead...

Poor Juliet and Romeo. They were just kids. You shouldn't judge them like adults for being idiots.
You ought to cut them some slack. Anyone who has ever been in love -- properly in love with all the associated agony and ecstasy -- knows full well it doth make fools of us all. Even Mr B himself. ;)
On the other hand, if I was forced to actually go to this "romance central", probably the prime source of all those godawful movies my wife watches with tissues, then I guess I could be tempted to react much the same.
Dude, you got to go to Rome next time. They threw Christans to the lions there. How can that be bad? -

b/c my beloved sister is on the ridiculous Super Boy show as a judge, i'm having some of the most terrible time of my life so far.
now, try to beat that. doesn't matter how Mrs McEwen loves those cheapass tearjerkers, you can't beat watching Super Boy, a knockout of the already mind-numbing American Idol
i am getting to Rome in just a bit. -
